Synthroid Can Cause Allergic Reactions and Sensitivity

He was put on continuous cardiac and vital sign monitoring throughout the desensitization process and emergency medications of parenteral hydrocortisone, chlorpheniramine and adrenaline were prepared at bedside in case he developed any allergic reaction. The desensitization of levothyroxine was successful without signs or symptoms of allergy. He was discharged well five days after admission with 100 mcg of oral levothyroxine. The incidence of hypothyroidism within a year post RAI therapy in Malaysia is 32.9%.1 The standard treatment for hypothyroidism is oral levothyroxine (LT4). SYNTHROID® (levothyroxine sodium) tablets, for oral use is a prescription, man-made thyroid hormone that is used to treat a condition called hypothyroidism in adults and children, including infants.

He was initiated with intravenous levothyroxine at a daily dose of 100 mcg for four consecutive days as he was severely hypothyroid. This was done with an initial test dose of 1 mcg administered as a slow bolus over five minutes, followed by the remaining dose given over another five minutes with continuous cardiac and vital sign monitoring. He had no immediate or delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the intravenous preparation. A study evaluated the effect of long-term thyroid hormone therapy on bone mineral density in 196 women (mean age, 74.4 years) compared to a control group comprised of 795 women (mean age, 72.1 years). The mean daily thyroxine dose was 1.99 mcg/kg (range, 0.3 to 6.6 mcg/kg) with a mean duration of therapy of 20.4 years (range, less than 1 to 68 years). Women taking daily doses of 1.6 mcg/kg or more had significantly lower bone mineral density levels at the ultradistal radius, midshaft radius, hip, and lumbar spine compared to controls.

Fluoride was added to nearly all public drinking water in the United States in the 1950s as a public health measure meant to minimize tooth decay, and we continue to fluoridate most of our water today. Our detox pathways may become overwhelmed and overburdened, and we end up with a toxic backlog. Larger doses may produce serious or even life-threatening manifestations of toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects.
Synthroid can be given to infants and children who cannot swallow whole tablets by crushing the tablet and mixing the freshly crushed tablet in a small amount (5 to 10 mL or 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls) of water and immediately giving the misture by spoon or dropper.

Studies looking at the incidence of acacia sensitivity are few, but it appears that there is a particularly high rate of sensitization among people living in Iran and surrounding countries, as well as the Philippines. Acacia is a family of shrubs and trees, and it is used as an ingredient (acacia gum) in some medications, including Synthroid brand levothyroxine, to provide form and shape to tablets. Some people who have pollen allergies and hay fever—especially to tree and grass pollens (such as ryegrass pollen)—may also have an allergy to acacia, even when it’s an ingredient in a medication. Symptoms ranging from a runny nose to a rash and/or hives, to synthroid mood abdominal pain may occur, and it may take some time to realize it’s the drug rather than something else that’s responsible.

Before taking this medicine

With a corn allergy, symptoms may range from hives to hay fever, to anaphylaxis. With celiac disease, symptoms may suggest an intolerance, such as bloating, abdominal pain, or constipation, but may also include less common symptoms ranging from anemia to infertility. An allergic reaction to Synthroid is most often diagnosed based on history, though allergy tests are available for acacia. Management most often includes switching to another brand of levothyroxine, and, fortunately, there are other brands of the drug with different ingredients that may be effective. Lead can be found in old paint, pipes, and some cosmetics, and chronic lead exposure has been linked to hypothyroidism. 29 Lead can impact thyroid function by blocking iodine uptake and affecting thyroid hormone production.
